4 July 2012-- a visit to Bursa

Upon arriving in Bursa, we visited Karagöz House, a shadow puppet theatre.

Despite the language barrier, it was very funny. One character is very serious, and the other is always pulling pranks.

Karagöz and Hacivat are the main characters. These are large versions of the characters. The puppets are roughly 10 inches tall and ate made from camel leather. There are in existence very ancient glass versions.
During a visit to Bursa, Queen Elizabeth viewed a performance here. (Pictures of that set and characters will be posted later.)

Karagöz is buried here. According to legend, Hacivat believed he was responsible for Karagöz's death and he left this area. He was later killed by pirates.
